Why we should support the BHF in Covid times like this?

The global COVID-19 pandemic has meant that thousands of charities have not been able to raise anywhere near the amount of funds that they can usually achieve. Fundraising has been stopped which means monies that would usually be donated has frozen. That combined with uncertainty of job security has meant that people have tightened their purse strings and have stopped donating to charity.

The British Heart Foundation as suffered a huge blow since the pandemic which has seen their ability to fund new research drop by a half even though heart and circulatory diseases are still the world’s biggest killers. In order to continue to fund life saving research, the British Heart Foundation are asking people to still donate as they urgently need support.

As progress slows when it comes to research, more and more lives are put at risk meaning the charity are facing their biggest crisis since their establishment. Heart and circulatory disease are often unavoidable and unpredictable but, trailblazing research means that scientists are able to dig deeper into how and why people are suffering fatal heart related illnesses.

Donating as little as £5 a month means test tubes can be purchased in order for researchers to learn more about heart failure, £10 a month funds one PhD student so they can begin a career in lifesaving research and £20 a month provides vital support from a helpline cardiac nurse.

Continuing to raise vital funds for the British Heart Foundation means that in the future the risk of dieing from a heart or circulatory disease can be much lower. Learning as much as we can about the heart means that scientists are able to paint an accurate picture of the risk factors that are associated with such fatal disease so that in the future they aren’t one of the world’s biggest killers.

In the UK, 30,000 people suffer sudden cardiac arrests out of hospital with the survival rate unfortunately sitting as low as 5%. Being able to contribute to funding vital research that goes into finding more about illnesses such as this means that the 5% survival rate could increase and more lives saved.

Of course, everyone’s situation is different and not everyone is in a position to be able to donate to charity but, if you are no matter how small or large your donation may be, the British Heart Foundation is a great charity to consider.
