Class B fires involve flammable liquids, such as diesel, petrol or ethanol. These can be tackled using foam, mist, powder or CO2 extinguishers.
Class C fires involve gases and should be tackled with powder based fire extinguishers
Class D fires involve flammable metals and can be dealt with using a powder extinguisher
Class F fires involve cooking oil and fats and can be tackled using a mist or wet chemical fire extinguisher.
Electrical Fires should only be dealt with using mist, CO2 or powder extinguishers.

What are the different fire extinguishers?

There are a number of different types of fire extinguishers available all of which are appropriate for different environments and types of fire. They are split into types and are: water, dry powder, foam, CO2 and wet chemical.

Where are fire extinguishers located?

Depending on which fire extinguisher you have will depend on where it should be located. For example, water extinguishers are used for Class A fires which are caused by paper and cardboard. This means that it would likely be stored in a warehouse, store cupboard, corridor or office. A foam extinguisher however treats Class A and B fires and is often found in fuel stations, offices, schools or kitchens. What different types of fire extinguishers are needed and where?

There are five different types of fire extinguishers which treat a host of different fires. The following fire extinguishers help to put out the following fires:

Water: Class A fires. This extinguisher is usually located in stairwells, corridors, warehouses, storerooms or building sites.

Dry powder: Class A, B, C, D and electrical fires. This extinguisher is often found in the same places that a water extinguisher would be located.

Foam: Class A and B fires. You would most likely store a foam extinguisher at a fuel station, office, classroom, reception area or kitchen.

CO2: Class B and electrical fires. CO2 fire extinguishers are found in electrical areas, offices, surgery, laboratories, manufacturing and warehouses.

Wet chemical: Class A and Class F fires. These are found in kitchen areas that have a fat fryer.

Is it a legal requirement to have a fire extinguisher in my business?

Yes. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 states that appropriate fire fighting equipment, including portable fire extinguishers must be provided anywhere where there is risk of life in non-domestic premises. This means that business owners must assigned a ‘responsible person’ to carry out fire safety risk assessment and to ensure there are adequate fire safety products available in the workplace.

What are the different fire classes?

There are a number of different fire classes that are associated with different types of fires. Class A fires are caused by carbon materials such as paper and cardboard. Class B fires are started by flammable liquids such as petrol. Class C fires are fires involving gases. Class D fires are flammable metals. Class F fires are fires involving cooking oil and fats. Electrical fires are fires involving electrical equipment.
