The Role of a Fire Warden
If a fire was to occur in your workplace, would you know what to do? How to evacuate? And what procedures to follow? These are important questions, which you need to know how to answer, which is why it is important to appoint fire wardens to ensure that you meet your health and safety obligations in relation to emergency plans and procedures.
1. Implementing Emergency Procedures
Once a Fire Warden has fully completed their training, their first port of call is to ensure that a building has a clear fire exit, the correct equipment and an evacuation plan. This includes all routes and exits having no obstructions, are easy to follow and are clearly marked. These measures ensure that in the event of a fire, everyone can exit the building quickly and safely.
2. Educating Others
They then need to pass on the knowledge they have learnt and implemented onto other members of staff. This includes raising awareness with other staff about the fire hazards that exist in the workplace and instructing them in how to respond in an emergency. Doing so will help ensure that if a fire occurs everyone can get out of a building safely.
3. Preventing a Fire
The main role of a Fire Warden is to help prevent a fire from ever occurring. They do this by not only implementing emergency procedures and educating others after they have finished their training, but also continuing to do so without their time at the company. This includes constantly surveying the fire exit rout and ensuring it is clear, checking all fire equipment isn't damaged and educating any new starts on the procedure to follow if there ever was a fire.
4. Assist in the Safe Evacuation
In the unlike event of a fire, a Fire Wardens role will include loudly and clearly directing everyone to safely leave the building and to only utilise all the appropriate routes and exits. On their own way out of the building, they will then check all areas and close all doors, to ensure that no one is left inside before they exit and to help stop the fire from spreading. Once they are outside, they should assist in taking a register to check that no one is left indoors.
