How can I get an AED for my school?

Lots of schools raise money in order to get an AED for their school. There are a number of ways to do this such as bake sales, sports competitions, fancy dress, penalty shoot outs and wear your PJs to school. There is also funding through the British Heart Foundation who may be able to support you in your goals to get an AED, you can apply for this online.

Why do I need an AED at my school?

An AED is used when someone suffers a sudden cardiac arrest. These can happen to anyone at anytime regardless of age. This means that unfortunately, children can suffer cardiac arrests. Having an AED in your school means that should anyone fall ill, someone is able to carry out life saving, emergency care thanks to having a defibrillator.

Are AEDs for schools different to AEDS for adults?

AEDs for schools are put in place should any students (or staff) suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. Most AEDs come with separate paediatric pads that are suitable for those less than eight years old or who weigh less than 25kg. If these electrode pads are not available however, you can use adult electrode pads.

Where should the AED in my school be located?

AEDs need to be visible and easily accessible by all so that in an emergency, it can be used as quickly as possible. This is what you need to take into consideration when decided where your AED will be located at your school. Places such as the school reception area or first aid room are often great places to store AEDs. Keep in mind, you should also let your local ambulance service know that you have a defibrillator and where it is located for cases of emergency.

How can I store my AED in a school?

AEDs in school should be stored somewhere easy to access. It is important to remember however, that they still need protecting from theft and vandalism so thinking carefully about where it will be stored is important. A cabinet may be a good idea to store your AED in or, ensuring it is in an office where a member of staff is responsible for it’s safety.
