Description
The Philips HeartStart HS1 Semi-Automatic Defibrillator is a lightweight, easy-to-use AED designed to guide the rescuer step by step through a cardiac arrest emergency.
Clear voice instructions adapt to the rescuer's actions and pace, while integrated CPR coaching and a metronome provide additional guidance during chest compressions. The HS1 automatically analyses the patient's heart rhythm and, when a shock is required, instructs the rescuer to press the flashing orange shock button.
Weighing approximately 1.5 kg with the battery installed, the HeartStart HS1 is compact and portable, making it particularly suitable for workplaces, offices, schools, hospitality venues and other indoor public-access locations. [4]
Why Choose the Philips HeartStart HS1?
- Simple semi-automatic operation - analyses the heart rhythm and tells the rescuer when to press the shock button
- Adaptive voice instructions - prompts respond to the user's progress rather than simply following a fixed sequence
- CPR coaching - includes selectable CPR guidance and a metronome
- Quick Shock - typically ready to deliver a shock within 8 seconds after the end of a CPR interval
- Lightweight and compact - approximately 1.5 kg including battery
- Automatic daily self-tests - monitors internal circuitry, battery and electrode pad readiness
- Four-year typical battery standby life
- Minimum 200-shock battery capacity
- Adult and paediatric capability - optional Infant/Child SMART Pads automatically change treatment settings

Adaptive Step-by-Step Rescue Guidance
The HeartStart HS1 is designed to guide the rescuer through each stage of using the AED.
Its voice instructions adapt to the user's progress. The HS1 does not move on to the next instruction until the rescuer is ready, and prompts can be repeated or rephrased when additional guidance is required.
This makes the HS1 particularly straightforward to follow during a stressful emergency.
Semi-Automatic Operation
The Philips HeartStart HS1 automatically analyses the patient's heart rhythm to determine whether defibrillation is required.
If a shockable rhythm is detected, the AED charges and instructs the rescuer to press the flashing orange shock button to deliver the shock.
The HS1 uses Philips' SMART biphasic waveform technology, with treatment automatically adjusted according to patient impedance.
CPR Guidance and Quick Shock
The HS1 provides selectable CPR instructions to help guide the rescuer through chest compressions.
Philips' Quick Shock feature allows the device to be ready to deliver a shock typically within 8 seconds after the end of a CPR interval, helping reduce the pause between CPR and defibrillation.
Adult and Paediatric Use
The HeartStart HS1 can be used for both adults and children, but different electrode pad cartridges are required.
The standard HS1 is supplied with Adult SMART Pads.
For infants and children under approximately 25 kg or 8 years old, the optional Infant/Child SMART Pads cartridge should be fitted. The HS1 automatically recognises the paediatric cartridge and adjusts both its CPR instructions and shock energy appropriately.
Adult treatment delivers a nominal 150 J, while the Infant/Child SMART Pads reduce energy to approximately 50 J.
Automatic Self-Testing and Ready Indicator
The HeartStart HS1 performs automatic daily self-tests to check key components including:
- Internal circuitry
- Waveform delivery system
- Battery capacity
- Electrode pad readiness.
A flashing green Ready light indicates that the AED has passed its self-tests and is ready for use.
If maintenance is required, the device provides an audible warning and changes its readiness indication.
Battery and Electrode Pad Life
The Philips HS1 uses a disposable lithium manganese dioxide battery.
When installed by its stated install-by date, the battery has a typical standby life of four years and provides capacity for at least 200 shocks or four hours of operating time.
Adult SMART Pads cartridges have a labelled use-by date of at least two years from manufacture. Electrode pads must be replaced after use or by the expiry date printed on the cartridge.
Compact and Lightweight Design
At approximately 21 x 19 x 7 cm and 1.5 kg including the battery, the HeartStart HS1 is one of the more compact public-access AED options.
It is designed to withstand a 1 metre drop and has an IP21 rating.
The IP21 rating means the HS1 is primarily suited to indoor or appropriately protected environments rather than exposed outdoor installations.
Where Can the Philips HeartStart HS1 Be Used?
The compact design and straightforward rescue guidance make the HS1 particularly suitable for:
- Offices and workplaces
- Schools and colleges
- Hotels and hospitality venues
- Retail environments
- Community buildings
- Places of worship
- Reception and public areas
- Indoor sports and leisure facilities
- Home environments.
Where the AED needs to be located outdoors, an appropriate protective AED cabinet should be used and the installation should take account of the HS1's IP21 protection rating.
